Castle Kreuzenstein

If you are wondering what is the arena of fencing in the cult movie from 1993 "The Three Musketeers", then you now know that it is the castle Kreuzenstein. It is unique in its form as is the structure of the castle. It is located in the lower Austria region, only about 21 kilometers from the capital Vienna. This ancestral palace is located in the east of the city Stockerau and north of the village Leobendorf.

Kreuzenstein castle is located on top of a small mountain, which offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Castle Kreuzenstein is mentioned in some documents dating back to 1115, in the following centuries it is used as the headquarters of various Flanders. Around 1645 during the so called 30 year war it was completely devastated.

Kreuzenstein was built between 1874 and 1907, while building it the constructors re-used some of the old foundations of walls. The initial feeling you will get when you see the castle, is that it is built in typical medieval style. However, this is not true. In the last elevation of the fortress walls, it was conceived as a Roman Gothic version of a "perfect palace."

Key figures in the restoration of the palace were the Wilczek family that bought the various parts of the castle Kreuzenstein from several parts of Europe in order to finally obtain and complete the authentic medieval castle look. So today it is a unique Kreuzenstein Castle of original medieval architecture.
