Mauterndorf Castle is a remarkable architectural building with a rich historical past. It is located in the Northeast region of Mauterndorf.

This most southern part of Salzburg, Lungau, is riched with natural beauty and the beautiful scenery around urged the Archbishop of Salzburg to make the palace for his summer residence since 1253 when it began construction.

Before that, during the reign of the Roman Empire one of the main commercial artery from north to south passes precisely through the mountains Hohe Tauern, where today stands the impressive Mauterndorf. By 1806 the castle remained in possession of the Archbishop of Salzburg, then fell into the hands of the state.

With the foundations of the castle built, Mauterndorf first four floors, prison, and a firewall around the fortified palace the construction was complete until a little later they added the three-storey tower, which enters the ceremony and lecture hall. In the 14th century Mauterndorf had new extensions, which led it to the approximately and form in which we know it today.

One wall was built parallel and the second made in order to ensure control of everything and control of anyone who passes on the way to Mauterndorf. In 15th and 16th centuries the new reconstructed building activities culminate in the so-called, hall "Keutschacher", which is impressive with its wooden walls and beautiful paintings.

If you choose to visit Mauterndorf you should not miss to visit the beautiful chapel which is located in close proximity. Built sometime between the 13th and 14th centuries was the erection in honor of saints Heinrich. The interior is really impressive. Inside you'll see the altar, which dates from 1455, three fundamental Christian statues of the Virgin Mary with Child, Katharina and St. Barbara.
