Mespelbrunn

Mespelbrunn is one of the most visited castles in northern Bavaria. Located in a small, sheltered, picturesque valley, it managed to stay safe during the Thirty Years War and decades of First and Second World War. Mespelbrunn is one of many castles in Germany, which have been preserved in their original sizes and shapes even including the oldest part of the castle, which dates from the 13th century and its massive tower.

The original defense building in the Renaissance facade undergoes changes, such as protective structures are rendered in beautiful Renaissance forms. In today's appearance Mespelbrunn was built in the years between 1551 and 1569 by Peter Echter. He also built a small building of the castle, which is located between the tower and chapel.

The northern and eastern wings of Mespelbrunn are supported by massive stone columns. The northern pillars are decorated with typical Renaissance architecture rosettes depicting angels and masks. One of the pillars is engraved the year 1564 with the coat of Echter and his wifes arms. The chapel, located in the northwestern corner of the fortress was built by the heir of the family - Hamann Echter. Some of the castle windows were painted by Countess Antoinette Ingelheim, and most of them depict kinship and family trees.

Today the doors of Mespelbrunn Castle are open to visitors daily from 9am to 12 pm and from 13pm to 17 pm. The main entrance of the castle is on the left side of the southern wing.
