Gillette Castle

Gillette Castle or also known as, Gillette Castle State Park is an unusual building that can not be compared to any other architectural criteria within the medieval, Renaissance or Gothic palaces. Gillette is situated in the dense woodland near the town of East Haddam in the U.S. state of Connecticut, it stands on a high plateau above the river Connecticut.

Gillette Castle was built as a private family estate of William Gillette - an American actor, famous mostly with performances on stage to perform the role of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. The palace was designed by ideas and visions of the actor which results in a stunning strangeness. Even the door handles and locks are more extravagant. The pretty interior is that some of the guest rooms in the castle Gillett are equipped with hidden mirrors through a complex system which are associated with the so called manor bedroom.

When William Gillette died, he had neither a wife nor descendants who he left his estate to. In his will he states that he wants to move his castle in the hands of some fool or an ignoramus who has no concept of exactly where or what the incredible castle Gillett is. In 1943 the estate of Gillette went under the tutelage of the government of Connecticut.

There is quite an attractive way to reach the estate of William Gillette. From late May to mid-November you can take the ferry from Chester - Hedliym and navigate the river to the beautiful castle. While sailing with the ferry shortly before the destination, closer to the mansion Gillette is a splendid view of the castle, perched on a beautiful scale in all its glory.

Gillette Castle is located on 67 River Road in East Hedam. Each year 1000, 000 visitors go to the beautiful park. In 2002, the mansion was re-open for public visits after nearly 4 years of restoration. During this period the repair of the castle Gillette cost $11 million.

Currently in the mansion you can visit the interesting museum, walk in the beautiful tourist routes adjacent to Gillette State Park or a have picnic in the specially built area. Regularly in different months of the year, the castle Gillett is host to many theater festivals.
