Gniew Castle

Gniew castle is a well restored medieval castle, which is located on the left bank of the Vistula River, in the north central Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland. Actually the castle is part of the eponymous Polish city that has a great and authentic Star center, where you can see interesting and historical buildings dating from the 15th to the 19th century and a Gothic church, dating from the 14th century. Restoration in recent years has aided the castle Gniew to preserve local medieval heritage of their region.

Today the fully restored castle Gniew has turned into a cultural center, but not only the city but the entire area. This keeps the medieval consciousness of the whole of Poland, the visitors can walk through interesting corridors and halls of the castle, have the opportunity to see various historical reenactments, exhibits, and plenty of leisure activities that are organized specially for guests of the Gniew castle.

Gniew castle is actually the largest fortress, which was the seat of the Teutonic Order as for a long time it was ruled by the Teutonic commanders.

A little later Gniew was sent to the Polish regime. When this powerful Teuton fort fell into the hands of the Poles, it became the seat of local administrators. In the following centuries, the Gniew castle repeatedly under went major repairs, restoration and strengthening of the structure, but in 1921 a huge fire, literally leveled it with the ground.

Today, the cultural aspect of the Gniew castle is underlined by several organizations which are located beyond the stone walls. Within the castle Gniew today, visitors can see a museum exhibition, which is a branch of the Archaeological Museum in Gdansk. There is located the local hunting association.

There is also a rehearsing choir with a lecture audience, which is part of the University of Warsaw. All of these organized structures are united by a common cause to maintain the medieval history, culture and traditions alive thanks to the Gniew castle.
