Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is a coastal city located in southern Texas. The population is 305, 215 people, making it the eighth largest city in Texas.
The name of the town comes from the Latin phrase that translates as the Body of Christ. It was given to the settlement by the Spaniards. The city is situated on an air base and the port of Corpus Christi, which is the sixth largest port in the territory of the country.
Corpus Christi was founded in 1839 by Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney, who called the area Kinney's Ranch. This post was to supply the Mexican Revolutionary Army, which was located about forty kilometers from the place. In 1845 the town was named Corpus Christi and was officially recognized as a city in 1852.
Corpus Christi covers an area of 1192 square kilometers, of which over sixty-six percent is water. Water that residents of the city drink comes from Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon Reservoir.
Winters here are mild, but January is the coldest month with temperatures reaching up to ten degrees above zero. In 2004 all inhabitants were happy because snow fell on Christmas Eve. Snow came for Christmas and then melted. The city of Corpus Christi has strong winds throughout the year.
The city is a place of favorite destinations for tourists from different parts of the country and around the world. In the city is located the Texas State Aquarium. The city has many museums - Museum of Asian Cultures, the South Texas Institute for the Arts, and the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History. The city has a large number of old buildings that have been restored and are a work of architectural art.
In the center are famous skyscrapers, including the One Shoreline Plaza. In the center of Corpus Christi is the Texas Surf Museum, which presents the history of surfing in the surf culture of the coast of Texas.
On the territory of Corpus Christi is located the botanical garden and nature center, where gardening programs are made. There are wonderful places where tourists come from around the world to observe interesting bird species. There are many migratory birds that are valuable for both academics and for ordinary tourists.
Corpus Christi is located near the King Ranch, one of the largest ranches in the world.
