Oakland
Oakland is one of the most beautiful cosmopolitan cities in the world. Among the biggest attractions are its incredible mix of cultures, arts, music, language and culinary styles. Oakland is the eighth largest in the U.S. state of California. Located on the shore of the Gulf San Francisco, it is one of the most important ports in the West Bank.
The park, named after the famous author Jack London (Jack London Square), is an extremely popular tourist spot, located at the port of Oakland. On its territory there are many attractions, including the former presidential yacht, the USS Potomac.
Oakland California Museum is among the most visited places in the city. Through it you can learn interesting facts about the history of American state and its culture, arts, traditions and scientific contribution. It is one of the few that combine exhibitions of disparate themes.
Near the center of town is Lake Merritt. The huge lagoon attracts thousands of tourists who may, by boat, enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the urban Californian city. Around it, there is a pedestrian zone. In addition, the water basin is used for many sports - sailing, canoeing and many others. Near it is a children's center - Fairyland. It is around Lake Merritt that hundreds of years ago the first inhabitants of today’s Oakland had settled.
Historic landmark are the Dunsmuir House and Gardens. The huge building has 37 rooms, 10 of which have exquisite fireplaces. The building was erected in 1878 by architect E. Freeman in neoclassical style. Despite the striking appearance and decor of the mansion, the biggest attraction is its domestic gardens, which are often used for many concerts and other events. The fee for access to the historic landmark is 4 to 5 dollars.
In Oakland is what is considered as one of the riches of California - Pardee Home Museum. The magnificent Victorian home originally astonishes its visitors with its architecture, but then the guests are fascinated by the interior of the building and the rich collections of artefacts from around the world.
Near the museum are many other places frequented by tourists, namely the Old Oakland, where you can find many preserved Victorian hotels. The beautiful City Hall building is also located near the museum. It was built in 1917 and for many years was the tallest building in Oakland.
In the center lies the majestic Tribune Tower, built in 1924 and renovated in 1976. The building is a symbol of the city. The 31-meter, 21-storey building was used for a major revision of the local newspaper, the Oakland Tribune.
Research-minded guests can visit the city Chabot Space and Science Center, through whose digital planetarium, they can immerse themselves in the depths of space. On its territory there are three very powerful telescopes through which you can observe astronomical objects.
One of the most popular places in the vicinity of Oakland, is the California Robert Simba volcanic reserve. The park is located on approximately 660 acres, within the scenic hills. Volcanic eruptions have formed extensive mountains in this beautiful park. The most interesting observation is Round Top - formed by frozen lava. Elevation is considered to date back 10 million years.
You will not go wrong if you take enough time to visit the local zoo. It is also located on the outskirts of town. The park takes care of the representatives of over 300 species. The most popular are those of tetrapod’s African savannah, which is their specially recreated natural habitat. Meerkats, monkeys and hyenas are among the most common animals in the park. The green Zone offers plenty of fun for young and old. The zoo is open daily from 10 am to 16 pm, the fee for access is between 7 and 10.50 dollars.
Oakland was created in 1852. Today the city's population does not exceed 400 thousand. Oakland is located only 13 kilometres from San Francisco. The mouth of the San Francisco Bay, only a few feet long, divides Oakland from another attractive city - Alameda.
