Beaumaris Castle in Wales

Surrounded by an artificial lake created in which swim undisturbed wild ducks and geese, Beaumaris Castle is one of the world cultural Sites in Wales. This magnificent medieval castle is situated on the shore of Menai Strait. Beaumaris is situated in the Welsh town of the same name, which is located northwest of the county Anglesey.

Construction of Beaumaris began in 1295 and was the last stronghold of the castles that King Edward I built on the the Menai Strait around Wales to ensure its territorial influence and power.

Castle Beaumaris

Beaumaris than last and largest of the three fortress built by the British ruler surpasses in size to Caernarfon Castle and Conwy Castle.

Built entirely on a new place that never before had an earlier fort or any type of building to prevent and limit the creative genius of the architect, Beaumaris is possibly the most complex example of medieval military architecture in Britain. Beaumaris Castle was built in a project of James of St. George, who also failed to complete work on this castle, but built it to almost geometric symmetry.

Beaumaris complex is designed as a powerful military fort, with a ring of defensive areas surrounded by lower external firewalls. It is certain that before the advent of guns during military battles, Beaumaris practice was very little. Ironically, the castle remains unfinished, and it failed to fully deploy defensive power with the exception of the Civil War of 17th century.

Beaumaris had built 18 feet wide ditches full of water. At the southern end of the fort they built a dock, where a 40 ton ship loaded almost to the front door of Beaumaris. On the outer wall were built 16 towers and two main gates. The entrance on the north side of never was completed. On the opposite end locates the main entrance from the sea.

Beaumaris Castle

Today Beaumaris is a real place for lovers of history or beautiful scenery. In the confines of the castle is a place where you can make a picnic. In some wards of the castle has interesting exhibitions. Do not miss out on a visit to the chapel on top of one of the towers, which with its vaulted ceiling is one of the highlights of Beaumaris. Also in this tower has a fascinating exhibition of "Castles of Edward I in Wales”.
