Provo Temple in Utah

Provo is a city located in the territory of Utah. It is the third largest city in Utah. Provo is the administrative center of Utah County and its location is such that it is north of the city of Orem and to the south – the City Springville. The population of the city of Provo is about 112 000 people. The town is situated on a territory of one hundred and eight square kilometers.

In Provo is located the university of Brigham Young, which is one of the largest private universities in the U.S., run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the university study thirty-four thousand students.

In Provo is located the largest missionary training center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Each week the Mission Center induces over four hundred missionaries to be trained over a period of three to twelve weeks. Then they join the other missionaries who are over fifty two thousand, scattered in more than one hundred and twenty countries. In the center more than a thousand educators teach sixty-two languages. Near the center is located the Provo Temple, which due to its proximity to the Brigham Young University and missionary center is one of the most powerful and busiest temples.

The first European who came to the area now known as Provo, was Father Silvestre Velez de Escalante, who was a Franciscan missionary from Spain. He visited the area in 1776. Originally this area was called Fort Utah. In 1849 here settled thirty-three Mormon families from Salt Lake City. In 1850 the name Provo was adopted, in honor of Étienne Provost, French-Canadian trapper who arrived in this region in 1825. The battle of Utah took place in 1850 in Provo.

Above it stands the mountain known as the mountain Y. A huge Y is made of white stones on the steep mountain, built in the early twentieth century in honor of Brigham Young University. In the mountains around the city wander deer, elk and pumas. The area around the city of Provo is a favorite of people who love fishing, skiing and tourism.

In Provo is located the Center for the Performing Arts Covey, where stage plays, ballet and music performances take place.

The capital City Library in Provo is located in a building where formerly Brigham Young University was. The building was built in 1892 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

In the center is currently under construction the Utah Valley Convention, whose opening is planned for spring 2012. This will hold meetings, seminars, parties and other events.

Every year in July, Provo hosts the American Freedom Festival. The festival is held at the stadium LaVell Edwards. The city has a particularly revered Independence Day, to which are always invited celebrities, famous actors, singers and athletes.

Every autumn in the city of Provo is held Latino Americano festival that presents the Spanish culture through ethnic performances and special food. The Festival Sego brings in the town musicians, artists and filmmakers.
