Nile River

The River Nile is the queen of rivers in the world. With its 6650 km length, the Nile is automatically considered the longest river on the planet.

It occurs in northern Africa and stems from two main sources - Lake Victoria in Uganda, often referred to as the White Nile and Tana in Ethiopia, known as the Blue Nile. Thousands of kilometers, passes along the which leads to the Mediterranean, where it flows.

Before this, the Nile passes through the largest desert on earth - the Sahara. With full right to say that the Nile is a life-giving force of the African territories.

In the very beginning, from eastern Equatorial Africa begins the, White Nile and Blue Nile – of the Abyssinian mountains. Only the Nile starts as a very small river. Originator of the African river became known only in the mid 19th Century when in 1858 John Hanning Speke - participant in the expedition R. F. Barton, took the journey alone.

It is he, the first European that reached Lake Victoria in Central Africa and revealed that Lake Victoria was the beginning of the White Nile.

From Khartoum to the town of Cairo, the valley of the Nile, it is only around 20 km. To this day, Egypt is entirely dependent on the flow of the River Nile. In addition to irrigation, the water of the Nile is the sole source of drinking water in Egypt.

Thanks to those African river lands that are cultivated around two fifths of the agricultural produce is of Egypt. The North of Cairo city extends the Delta of the Nile. Huge and impressive, it extends to the major 22, 000 sq. km area. It was there that it is centered around three fifths of the arable land in Egypt, the most fertile lands in the region.

The ancient Egyptians celebrated the Nile as a godsend, because ultimately the longest river in the world is actually the reason for the emergence and formation of the Egyptian civilization.

During the Neolithic era, many people accommodated themselves within the Nile valley, wanting to escape the merciless desert and dry river beds of the past. The Nile is the identification of location for the people who acquired the first agricultural habits and began to develop in the VI millennium BC

Then a further two thousands years later, VI - IV millennium BC, archaeological finds the late Neolithic cultures that indicates a settled life. Agriculture, fisheries, livestock, hunting and gathering were the first trades and professions which were used by locals, thanks mostly along the Nile. This laid the foundations of craftsmanship and early production of the metal. In the next era, the Nile is also the mother of life in this African territory.

So, starts the beginning of the Egyptian civilization and empire, which forms the core among the great cities at the time. The cities which are formed along the Nile are, Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Khartoum. History remembers only two cases in which the Nile froze. One is over 829 years ago and the other - in 1010.
