Portchester Castle

Portchester Castle is a unique archaeological treasure, because it is kept as a very good model as the Roman fort is perfectly preserved.

The palace itself dates from the Middle Ages and is a former Roman fortress. In fact it is the only of its kind across northern Europe, because only there, are the walls of the fortified buildings so well preserved so as the main bastion of the Roman era.

Portchester Castle is located in the English county of Hampshire, slightly East of the commercial city Fareham, located in the southwest English county.

Since this is the oldest building in the town the settlement and surroundings today welcomes many tourists who come to see that Roman fortress. In its current form, the castle consists of a pleasant courtyard with an external main gate, which leads to the bastions. The internal courtyard has also been strengthened, but is the vestibule to enter the actual castle and tower.

Over the centuries, the original dimensions of the palace buildings were renovated and expanded several times to keep it up to today's design. Originally the Roman fort was quite simple, but was later reinforced by the Saxon kings, and then in the Middle Ages a major reconstruction of Portchester took place as it suffered damage during the 17th century.

Portchester Castle was used most often as a defensive Fort, mostly in the early centuries of its existence, and then served as a Royal residence in 1665 and then after a period of time the fort had operated as a prison.

Today the Portchester Castle is open for tourist visits as a major attraction and landmark in the area. Portchester is a favorite local spot for picnics and school trips. Inside the palace there are many interesting historical exhibits.
