Eugene is a city located on the territory of Oregon. The city is the administrative center of Lane County. The city of Eugene is located in the southern valley Willamette. The population is 156 185 people. In the city of Eugene is located the University of Oregon.

Eugene is named after the town founder, Eugene Franklin Skinner. He built in 1846 a bungalow in the first place, which serves as a shopping center and was converted into an official post office in 1850. Skinner founded Eugene in 1862 and then took over the ferry on the river Willamette.

The first major educational institution in the city was Columbia College, which was founded several years before the founding of the University of Oregon. Twice the College became victim of fires and after damage were reported from the second fire, it was decided not to build the college anew.

Part of South Eugene is now known as College Hill. Once, Columbia College was there. The city decided to raise funds to build a new university - it was the University of Oregon. So the little town became an educational center. In 1872 the Legislative Assembly decided and disbursed funds for the construction of the University of Oregon. Eugene won the right to build the university, at the expense of adjacent city of Albany. In 1873, land was donated for the building of the university campus. Three years later - in 1876 the University of Oregon opened for its first students.

In the late nineties of the twentieth century and early twenty-first century, anarchists were rampant in Eugene. They are involved in various protests and created a bad reputation for the city. It was named the capital of anarchists in the U.S.

The movement of anarchists developed from otherwise peaceful ideas for cleaner nature and saving trees. In protest marches, however, they were not going to give voice to ideas and goals, but broke the windows of the shops for timber. There were even physical clashes with police.

One of the most memorable protests by anarchists in Eugene is the famous mud protest. The crowd that gathered to protect trees, behaved terribly, and police had to disperse them by spraying cayenne pepper. The city even publishes a newsletter for the anarchists.

The city of Eugene is known as one of the centers of hippie culture in the sixties of the twentieth century.

The annual celebration of the city of Eugene goes into three days of festivities in the city center. They select the Queen, which is a major figure in the festivities for the year in the city. She is officially crowned as the true queen.

In July, the vineyard festival is held. The festival collects over twenty thousand people.

Every Saturday, there is a market in Eugene, which was founded in the seventies of the twentieth century and attracts huge numbers of people. This was the first Saturday market on U.S. territory.

The town conducts the Oregon Festival of American Music. In Eugene there are many museums, including the Natural History Museum and Museum of Space.
