Hochosterwitz Castle

Hochosterwitz is one of the largest castles across Europe. This medieval fortress is located 10 km east of St. Veit an der Glan. Along with its unparalleled size Hochosterwitz may be regarded as one of the most impressive and beautiful medieval castles in Austria.

For the first time Hochosterwitz is mentioned in a document of German Louis at the end of the ninth century, the fortress is named "Astarwiza", which is Slovenian origin. Built nearly 160 m high on a cliff in the Austrian region of Carinthia, this palace is seen on a clear day from a 30 km distance by its extent size and shape and projecting hilly background. Its foundations were laid between 1570 and 1586 on the steep rocky hill that rises above the beautiful green valley.

The route to take to reach Hochosterwitz is a real experience in itself, but it will seem a while before you will find a beautiful view of the entire scenic region around. The transition is about 700 meters long, and during this time you will go through 14 gates.

Of course, you can save a few of them if you use other facilities as an alternative route for the ascent to the palace. Located on the back of the castle itself, a more rugged part of the hill will also lead you there.
