Walmer Castle
Walmer Castle is an interesting historical castle located in the English county of Kent and was raised in the Middle Ages as a military fortification. The castle today with its natural gardens is an incredible place for walks and weekend getaways.
Walmer Castle is a self-titled English town and was part of the military plan of Henry VIII to establish a chain of defenses along the coast of England. All castles which came within the fortification system were released by Henry VII, with the name, Henrician Castles.
The English King ordered the erection of a powerful military fortress and construction began in 1539-1540. At that time the English coast was under perpetual threat from Spain. As a result, appears castle Walmer, which was a brilliant defensive structure, with its fortifications and defensive ditches between them.
Unlike most early medieval castles, castle Walmar did not have high protective walls. This fortress was built by Henry VIII at a relatively low level, allowing Walmer to be synchronized in accordance with the mode of attack which threatens it.
At the time the gunpowder was increasingly being used, and any high protective walls of Walmer would had not been helpful in providing prompt areas to attack the opponent. With low external walls of the Walmer Castle fortified with powerful bastions and additional protection of the earth shafts and pits, for attacking the fortress there were fewer options for specific attacks, while its defenders opened up more opportunities.
Since the early 18th century Walmer Castle became the official residence of Lords Warden, but later it began to lose its military significance and functional capacity. Heirs of Warden considered Walmer Castle unnecessary loaded with military and therefore took considerable repairs and changes to the castle.
Walmer is strongly influenced by the reconstruction made by William Pitt and the second Earl of Granville. They are the "culprits" for the emergence of a nice garden around the castle today, which emphasize the natural beauty of the local area.
