Aga Khan Palace - Ghandi Memorial in Pune

Memorial Gandhi, also known as Aga Khan Palace is located in the Indian city of Pune. The majestic white palace was built in 1892 by Imam Sultan Shah Aga Khan. However, later in 1969 the castle was donated to India by his successor Aga Khan IV in appreciation of the personality and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi.

There are many reasons for the palace to be associated with the life and the way of the Indian spiritual leader. In 1942 Gandhi calls for immediate independence of India. A little later he was arrested and held in Pune two years under the home address that is in Aga Khan Palace. During this time his wife Kasturba and his personal secretary and a very good friend Desai are constantly there. During the downtime, however, both associates of Gandhi die. Their remains were laid at the campus.

Subsequently part of the dust of Gandhi (Who died in 1948) is also affixed to the castle.

After two years on May 6, 1944, the Father of the Nation was released for health reasons.

These facts make the place sacred to all Indian people. Every year thousands of pilgrims come to honor the memory of Mahatma Gandhi and his relatives. Palace welcomes visitors every day from 9 to 18 hours. Access fee is 5 rupees for adults and 2 children.

The palace is located near the site Yerwada in the city of Pune.
