Clarksville
Clarksville is a city located in the territory of Tennessee. Clarksville City is located in Montgomery County and is the administrative center of the county. The population of the city of Clarksville is 132, 929 people.
The town was incorporated in 1785. It is named after General George Rogers Clark, a war hero for the Revolution. He was the brother of William Clark, from the expedition of Lewis and Clark.
Among the nicknames of the city is the city of Queens, Clarksvegas, Queen of Cumberland and New South Portal.
The area now known as Clarksville, eleven thousand years ago was inhabited by paleo- Indians. Here lived the ancestors of the tribe Muscogee, who inhabited the area around the Tennessee River.
In 1539 Spanish explorers first visited the region of Tennessee, led by Hernando de Soto. Indians could not deal with viruses and different diseases that Europeans brought in their area, and this led to a sharp population decline.
European settlers migrated the few remaining Indians to the south and west. They were people of the Muscogee tribes, Yuchi, Chickasaw and Choctaw. From 1838 to 1839 about seventeen thousand Indians were forced to go to the Indian territory west of Arkansas. The way which they went, became known as the Path of Tears, as four thousand Indians died along the way.
In 1779, James Robertson leads a group of settlers from eastern Tennessee. A year later, John Donelson leads a group of people to establish a French trading settlement. They founded the village Big Lick, which later became Nashville.
In 1790, the legislature of North Carolina defines land west of the state line as federal lands, which can be used in the program to grant land. Land is distributed to the soldiers who pay for it, by performing military service.
The formation of the city associated with the end of the American War of Independence. Clarksville lost many men during the Second World War. Here was built Fort Campbell, and soldiers from Fort participate in many military campaigns since the formation of the fort.
On January 16, 1784 John Armstrong filed for the legislature of North Carolina to create Clarksville city, named after General George Rogers Clark.
Even before they officially created a new city, many settlers arrived here. The area dealt with tobacco trade. Clarksville became a tobacco inspection station.
In the nineteenth century Clarksville was growing rapidly. In the early nineteenth century, the city had twenty and two stores, one of which is for silver.
Until the beginning of the Civil War, the general population of the city and county is twenty thousand. The region had many black slaves who worked in tobacco fields. After the war, began the reconstruction of the city. A big fire in 1878 destroyed sixty thousand square meters in the center of Clarksville. It destroyed the courthouse and many other historic buildings.
In 1913 Lillian Theatre is opened, where the first film was screened. The theater, which has more than five hundred seats burned in 1915. In the twenties of the twentieth century, the city continues to evolve. More theaters and schools were built.
In 1999 the central part of Clarksville was devastated by a tornado F3, which destroyed many buildings, including the court.
