Plön Castle

Plön Castle stands on a cliff above the town of the same name located in the northern German region of Schleswig Holstein. City Plön has long been declared a climate resort, which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in this part of Germany. Some resorts have 16 lakes of various sizes and two thirds of the area of the town was also occupied by water.

Plön Castle stands above the beautiful Grosser Plöner which is a size of 30, 11, 5 sq.

It offers wonderful views of the Old Town, which is a great place to walk the streets with its shaded, historic buildings and the beautiful garden of the castle Plön. It is one of the most beautiful and largest palaces in northern Germany. This castle is also the only surviving castle on a hill located in that part of the country.

The town and Plön Castle are located about 30 km to the south of the town of Kiel. The first member of the family Plön, which had a major contribution to the construction of the Renaissance architectural masterpiece is that of Joachim Ernst von Holstein. He decided to erect the palace on the occasion of his marriage to have a place to live with his family. The financing of the construction came mainly from the very solid dowry of the bride - Dorothea Augusta.

The beautiful palace in the form in which you see it today was built in the 17th century during the Thirty Years War and the following centuries it offered interesting and quite colorful history. Plön is the former residence of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein. After their family no longer inhabited the palace, it was passed into the hands of the local authorities.

But Dorothea had no money to sponsor the reconstruction of the fortress, which led to the re-sale of the castle Plön and the adjacent lands. Today, the mansion operates as a school. For many years the owners of the castle did not allow tours through Plön Castle, but now it is partially open for public visits.
