Guaita Fortress in San Marino

Guaita Fortress rises majestically above the eponymous capital of San Marino. This fortress is one of the three towers that surround the city and give the appearance of the history of San Marino. The other two towers and fortresses, which were built after Guaita are De La Fratta and the tower Montale.

Fortress Guaita is the oldest of the three towers and is built on the grand peak of Monte Titano. Considering that it has stood for about 10 centuries on the peak it is not strange that it is the most popular of the three towers and a very popular tourist aattraction.

Fortress Guaita was built in the 11th century and served some time as a prison. As a national symbol and pride of the people of San Marino Guaita, along with two other fortresses depicts the national flag and emblem of the country.

The three castles that surround the city are also known with its attractive name - Cake of the Three Towers. This entertaining reference to the cake comes from the fact that Guaita, De La Fratta and Montale towers have a similar location on the hill to that which looks like a cake of three layers, covered with chocolate. Residents of San Marino have definitely made the fantasy.

In San Marino you can still see the so-called tower which was erected during the Middle Ages. That building is very attractive with its pentagonal shape and foundations. The ancient tower was renovated in the 15th century and has since remained virtually unchanged in terms of architecture.

The castle Guaita has pretty rooms which were more like prisons in which a lot of people died in during those dark times. Today's prisons of Guaita are one of the main attractions in the castle.
