Landeck Castle

Landeck castle is a real window into the past. Built in 1250 by a Tyrolean ruler, Landeck castle dominates the Austrian town of the same name in all its splendor and historical charm.

Nowadays the Landeck castle houses an interesting museum of history of the region where visitors can learn everything about this world culture, art, habits and customs throughout the centuries until today.

Besides the museum, Landeck is one of the most important sites for cultural events in the region as there throughout the year concerts and exhibitions are present non stop.

Landeck castle is situated at the ancient Roman fortress - Via Claudia Augusta, within the incredibly beautiful and naturally rich Tyrolean region.

Nearby there are intertwined wondrous beautiful views of the river valleys, gorges and waterfalls, all of which provide many opportunities for sports and outdoor recreation for visitors. Thanks to its convenient location Landeck has good access to the three ski areas in the region of Tyrol.

After erecting the castle Landeck, in the 13th century it became a private palace of the Count of Tyrol. For dozens and even for hundreds of years it was used as the seat of local government and judiciary and later it was expanded by Count Meinhard II.

A significant period of bloom for the Landeck castle was marked when it was in the possession of the Knights of Schrofenstein.

Indeed the fort site today of Landeck had before a settlement which is dated from around 715. The current appearance of the castle Landeck is a result of its large-scale interior and exterior renovation and repair between 1969 and 1972. Between 2005 and 2007 was when the last significant expansion of the palace took place when the new premises for the museum and additional spaces for holding concerts was built.

The permanent ethnographic museum exhibition of Landeck castle is where visitors can get acquainted with all the details about the history of the local Tyrolean lands, which often goes beyond the framework of the region.

Within the tower of Landeck lies another interesting exhibition of handmade animal motifs. In the palace the gallerists are continuously rotating the different theme exhibitions.

Landeck castle is open for public visits every day except Monday. The medieval castle can only be entered against an entry fee which varies from 3.50 euros to 30 euros for an organized group of 10 people.
