Sigmaringen Castle

Sigmaringen Castle is a magnificent palace, located in the lower mountain slopes of the Swabian Alps. Sigmaringen Castle is located in the southern German state of Baden Württemberg dominated by the same name German town with its beautiful facade.

Sigmaringen Castle stands just above the lowest part of the Danube and the territory that now falls within the Upper Danube Nature Park. For centuries, the Sigmaringen Castle is the official residence of the Hoentsolern family or rather it is the seat of the Princes of Hohenzollern.

For the first time the medieval manor is mentioned in 1077 in the chronicles of the Petershausen monastery. The oldest parts of the palace were rendered in the dungeons and its reconstruction took place in the 17th and 19th century.

Many experts believe that the lower parts of Sigmaringen Castle must have archaeological excavations carried out so to bring more details of its history. Sigmaringen Castle itself was erected on a hill, known simply as Schlossberg, which had an strategic scope over the area.

It stands at about 35-40 meters from the level of the river itself. In the area of the Sigmaringen Castle many artifacts from Roman times have been located. It is assumed that the fortification of the 12th century, which is known as the Roman tower, without any doubt can be dated from the Roman era.

Sigmaringen Castle is considered the largest along the river Danube. It started as a perfect medieval fortress and the masters from Hoentsolern made it through the ages into a brilliant palace structure.

However, later it goes into the possession of several other families in the middle Ages. Around 1200 Sigmaringen Castle was renovated by the Helfenstein family. After them it falls into the hands of Werdenberg who managed it from 1399 to 1534.

Today's tour through the halls of Sigmaringen Castle ensure a real trip back in time and create an incredible sense of the lifestyle that led the nobility.

Everywhere you can see decorated furniture, paintings, porcelain and precious objects. In the museum's exhibition hall of arms you can see one of the largest private collections of arms in Europe, the collection contains artifacts from the Middle Ages to the present day.
