Mount Bromo
Mount Bromo is one of two majestic mountain ranges forming the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. This famous and favorite of many people worldwide tourist destination is located in East Java in Indonesia. The Natural Park is located about 145 km from Surabaya in the north. Once you land at the local airport in the mountain town, you can take a bus or rental car. The Road to Bromo takes about 3-4 hours.
The attendance and the enormous popularity of the peak as a tourist attraction are due to its easy accessibility. Of all the volcanic mountains here, Bromo is the most attractive and a lot of tourists come here to watch the sun rise, behind the massive volcanic crater.
Tenger caldera is composed apart from Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru. The latter is the highest point in East Java with its 3676 m altitude. Bromo is actually one of the many peaks in the huge volcanic caldera. It is distinguished from others, however, after eruption, in the shape of a hat from which white smoke comes out. The huge caldera, which has a diameter of about 10 sq. km. is known as Louth pass. That means a sea of sand. This great desert area contrasts vividly with the lush green valleys of vegetation.
The area Bromo is inextricably linked to the historical culture of the Tenggerese followers of Buddha. This ethnic group is the indigenous people of the mountains in Tenger in East Java and has interesting religious rituals . Their main livelihood is agriculture.
Every year on the fourteenth day of Casado, the Tenggerese gather at the edge of the active crater of Bromo to pray to God Hiyang Vitti Vase. During the prayer, they carry religious sacrificial offerings of rice, vegetables , fruits and animals. This holiday is called Yadniya and anyone who wishes to attend it, may visit the National Park at this time of year.
