Urquhart Castle

Once the castle Urquhart was one of the largest, massive and powerful medieval fortresses in the territory of Scotland. Though sunk in ruins today Urquhart continues to impress with its interesting structure. The castle stands on a rocky peninsula which is in relation of the lake Loch Ness.

Urquhart is quite close to the castle from which one saw a famous monster of Loch Ness. This medieval gem is located midway between Fort William and Inverness Castle with its beautiful name sake castle. The picturesque ruins of Urquhart stand just 2 miles from the village of Drumnadrochit.

It is not known exactly when the castle was built, but historical texts testify to the existence of the castle Urquhart that this place was established from the beginning of the 1200 and that the surrounding lands were granted to the Durward family in 1229, which suggest that they were the potential builders of the fortress.

On entry into Urquhart you will go through the main gate, from the door on the left you will be lead to a small exhibition describing the history and repent for Scotland. Very close up you can see the former cell, or rather prison, which is guarded by a guards. At the other end of the ruins of Urquhart to the south side you can see the remains of other medieval artifacts. Be sure to climb the stairs and the high 5 storey watchtower.

From the top of the tower opens up many good and interesting views. If you look down and left you see where once was the big hall of the castle Urquhart and kitchen. If you turn your eyes right you can see from the former oval chapel. At the other end of the castle you can see a round stone building, which the supply of pigeons was endless as they were a favorite dinner of the king.

In 2003 the palace Urquhart was handed as a donation to the Scottish National Historical Fund by Mrs. Eila Chewett from Hertfordshire. The castle is located in the third historic busiest area of Scotland.

Visits are possible all year round, as the tourists there have good organization from the visitor's center. There are also a restaurant, shop and cinema. The Castle Urquhart has often become the backdrop for wedding ceremonies.
