Almodovar Castle

Almodovar Castle is another medieval fortress on the territory of Spain, which impresses with its interesting history and impressive structure. Almodovar Castle stands in a picturesque area in the Spanish municipality of Almodovar del Rio. From there Cordoba is located only 22 km away.

Almodovar Castle dominates the green areas in the region, stands on a magnificent natural hill and is about 252 meters from ground level. The hill is named Cerro de la Floresta. The entire fortress complex of Almodovar has spread over an area of 5 628 square meters and by far offers a very impressive panorama view.

The rugged mountain fortress that appeared about 720 years was built by Arabs. Before that time on top of the hill was an ancient Iberian fortress. Later, during the Roman Empire situated there was the Roman military camp called Castrum. During that time the fortress was the Caliphate of Cordoba of Cerro de la Flores then later passed into the possession of Fernando III. Later Almodovar Castle then grew from its Christian owners.

Even later Almodovar Castle had served the residence of two monarchs - Pedro I and Enrique II of Castille. In addition, the fortress was their headquarters, the rulers used it as a prison where opponents were introduced. According to local folklore tales some of the kings and rulers who inhabited the castle held fabulous treasures.

After 15 centuries, when the entire area around Almodovar was Christian, the castle was abandoned and very much destroyed. In the early 20th century, the castle owner Rafael Desmaisieres, which is Count of Torrealva began a massive restoration project, which lasted more than 36 years. As a result of the massive restoration processes Almodovar Castle today is one of the best preserved across Spain.
