Kaiserburg Castle

Kaiserburg Castle or also known as Castle in Nuremberg is one of the main tourist attractions in this historic German city. It is considered one of the most important imperial palaces dating from the Middle Ages. For more than 5 centuries - from 1050 to 1571 all the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire choose Kaiserburg for its headquarters in various stages during his reign.

Today Nuremberg is a modern city, with nearly half a million inhabitants. Along with the modern buildings the city has a unique medieval city center. Its annual frameworks comprise international events such as Festival singers in July, Festival in Old Town in September and the world famous Christmas market in December. The gothic cathedrals in the old town, along with the soaring Kaiserburg have witnessed the glory of the medieval city.

Kaiserburg Castle

Archaeological studies in recent years show that the place of today's castle Kaiserburg was established more than 1000 years ago, however, these hypotheses are not supported by any historical documents. It is not mentioned anywhere before 1105 in the 13th century when Kaiserburg was the center of royal government. From all parts of the palace built at that time only the tower Luginsland has been maintained. It stands out against the rest of the palace and its construction began in 1377.

Kaiserburg originates from the 11th century as the residence of Henry III. In 1332 Nuremberg became an imperial city, but this time the power was to the Bavarian King - Ludwig. The original castle of Kaiserburg was represented as a brick castle with a firewall, which was guarded by 46 fortified towers. The front wall had a moat dug which was filled with water.

Five gates allowed one to enter within the castle and four of them can still be seen. Opposite the railway station in Nuremberg, Königstor is located. That is the first part of the ancient town that tourists see when they arrive in the German city.

Today the fortified wall of Kaiserburg reaches a length of 5 km, and many towers are something that can not be seen in every medieval fortress.
