Semeru Volcano, Indonesia

Mount Semeru volcano is the highest volcano on the island of Java. The volcano is named after a mountain of Buddhist mythology. The volcano rises to a height of 3676 meters. It actually is the highest mountain on the island of Java. From the volcano pours out smoke at regular five minute intervals.

Semeru volcano is an active volcano and is known for its incredible views, at sunrise and at sunset. Mount Semeru is one of the hundred and twenty-nine active volcanoes in Indonesia. Of these seventy-nine erupt very often.

Every half hour one gets a small explosion in the volcano, the greater the time interval between the explosions, the stronger they are. Guides for tourists however know the behavior of the volcano, so they lead tourists to the summit, boasting magnificent views of the ocean and mountains. Visiting the southern crater of the volcano is possible during the reduction of explosive volcanic activity.

The Crater of the volcano is breathtaking. Special ceremonies are held at the top of the volcano on the Day of Independence, and other important holidays. Mount Semeru is a challenge for climbers from around the world. Addition to those facing the challenge of climbing, is that they can enjoy very beautiful views.

The tip that many mountain climbers climb is Mount Mahameru. The Crater, which is located on top of the volcano, is called Saloko. Around Mount Semeru rise many hills and forest mountain trees.

In 1913 the crater dome height was 3744 meters. This lasted until 1973. The climb to Mount Semeru volcano takes around four days. This can happen from the city of Malang. At the foot of the volcano is located the village Ranu Pani. It has a tourist office, where you can sleep. To the village has two lakes - Ranu Pane and Ranu Regulo.

The volcano can be climbed by trails or paths that the locals use, but it is quite difficult as it is very steep and not everyone can use them. In the area of the volcano can be seen edelweiss.

Tourists stop to make camp at Ranu Kumbolo, which rises to 2400 m altitude. This is a place that many climbers use to rest before continuing on their way to the top of the volcano. This is the place where they can replenish their water. From Ranu Kumbolo are seen beautiful prairies, known as the Oro-oro Ombo. In the mountains of the region there are many birds, deer and even tigers.

At an altitude of 2700 meters above sea level is rising Kalimati, which offers space for stretching the tent to rest. Nearby there are beautiful woods and meadows.

Tourists are recommended to wear special masks as a lot of volcanic ash flies in the air.

The next stop on the way to the top is Arcopodo, which is located at an altitude of 2900 meters. Hence there are only about four hours to the top, you must pass through sand dunes, which are very steep and is easy to fall.

Baggage carriers must remain at Arcopodo because it is impossible and pointless to bear bags up. Climbing should be done during the dry season - June, July or August, maybe September. During the rainy season, it is very slippery and unpleasant for tourists.

On top of Mount Semeru tourists should not go to the south side of the crater, as there are many poisonous gasses there. The temperature of the tip is zero degrees and the weather is usually very foggy, especially at lunch. The eruption of white smoke, which can be black or gray, rises eight hundred feet.

Volcano ash, stones and sand are thrown, and if tourists are standing very close, it can be quite dangerous for them.
