Jog Falls

4.0 1

Jog Falls is often called the "bold waterfall", but that would even seem a "mild" definition, if you see yourself in front of the huge falling waters Jog. It is one of the most powerful and largest waterfalls in the world and the highest waterfall in the territory of exotic India. Jog Falls is also known by alternative names of Gerusoppe falls, Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi.

Jog Falls, India

Jog Falls is near Sharavathi river, in the western mountain range Gatti. This is South India, and the beautiful and impressive natural phenomenon was formed in the western part of Karnataka.

The height of the water drop in Jog is about 253 meters, making it about 6 times higher than Niagara Falls and 2.5 times higher than Victoria Falls (in Zambia and Zimbabwe). Jog is formed at 1500 meters altitude, in the western mountains of Gatti.

This massif is a 1600 km long chain of mountain ridges and hills, from which spring almost all major rivers in India. These rivers provide water for irrigation and drinking to more than 250 million people.

Jog Falls consists of 4 main falls divided into several cascades. Their number changes during the monsoon and the amount of water that pours from them is variable depending on the season. That is why during different seasons, Jog changes shape.

In the monsoon period, it reaches up to 1.023 cubic meters of water per second, but during the dry seasons, the flow decreases fivefold, which is largely removed from the grandeur of this natural phenomenon.

Jog is one of the most popular tourist attractions in India and also a source of electricity. Near it was built a large hydroelectric power plant.

Most appropriate time to visit the waterfall is in the months between August and December, or during the rainy period, when Jog is one of the most spectacular natural sceneries on our planet.

The Jog waterfall can be reached easily, as it is located 30 km from Sagara, 104 km from Shimoga, where you can see several ancient temples, and around 379 km from Bangalore.

Near the waterfall was built an observation deck, to allow tourists to view the falling water and there are different entertainment options, providing facilities for water sports and walks.
